What is a Postpartum Doula

Welcoming home a new baby is a major life transition. You have been preparing for this moment for months, and the moment has arrived.

The saying "it takes a village" is is absolutely true. The postpartum period is a beautiful time where you get to know this amazing new human that you brought into this world. It may at times seem overwhelming, and that is what a postpartum doula is for.

A postpartum doula is an assistant to the new mother and father. She provides valuable evidence based information about topics like infant-feeding, recovering from birth both physically and emotionally, mother-baby bonding, and basic infant care. She plays the role of "mothering the mother", and will help with light chores, errands, and can even help with older children so the mother and baby can get priceless one-on-one time to bond. She can discuss options with you (though it is worth noting, she is not a medical professional and can provide information only- not medical advice), and assure you that you are doing the best job possible for your baby. She can even work with your partner, guiding him on how he can best support the mother, and what they can do to also achieve that indescribable bond with their baby.

In many cultures, it is customary for other women to gather around a new mother and take care of her for the postpartum period. Studies have shown long term benefits for both mother and baby when the mother is taken care of and given the opportunity to simply bond with her baby, and let everyone else take care of the other things. The postpartum doula not only does this, but also has been trained, and continues to train, in order to provide you with the most accurate, evidence based information possible.

As a postpartum doula, I am excited to get the chance to meet your unique family, and help support you in whatever way is needed for your family to flourish and prosper.
